What’s the Buzz about Networking?
What we can learn from bees that will sweeten our networking efforts
By Julia Palmer
The Honey Bee does many things which we at BConsulted believe we all aspire to in
our relationships with ourselves, teams, prospects and clients.

The Honey Bee collects pollen without impoverishing the many flowers it visits, and it connects flower to flower through pollination.
The idea is that when we collect knowledge of people we should ensure that people don't become poorer after sharing their insights with us. Further, we should also connect one person with another through understanding their outcomes, applying effective communication strategies and networking within our contacts.

|
The honeybee is not born knowing how to make honey; the younger bees are taught by the more experienced ones.
Human beings are a product of learning: our lives and personalities are shaped by values, behaviours, circumstances and more. Our communication styles reflect this and we often take all that we are into a networking situation coupled with certain expectations. However, like any skill networking must be learned and developed – networking takes work, as the name rightly suggests.

|
Honeybees work together in a highly structured social order.
Organisations today whilst not as preset, adhere to strict protocols, cultures and philosophies to achieve their outcomes. It is only when all representatives of the company unite and perform that overall excellence is achieved. For this to happen, we must recognise our involvement as a key component of the mechanics of an organization. And in addition clearly communicate and converse between all roles within.

|

|
Honeybees visit 50-100 flowers during one honey collecting trip. Furthermore, to make one pound of honey, bees must visit 2 million flowers.
An important fact for humans to be aware of; we are often too hasty and impatient in striving for our goals. We underestimate the amount of work it takes and how many people we will need to communicate with along the way. Qualifying our network and acknowledging the longer term nature will mean that we can start to implement strategies to achieve the end result.

The honeybee is a social insect living in large colonies of from 20,000 to 80,000 individuals.
Humans are also very social in nature. Our business and personal networks are wide and varied. It is through a diverse network that we can achieve our goals both at work and beyond. Therefore, we must recognize the significance of managing our relationships effectively and proactively.

|
In a single day, a honeybee may fly 12 miles and pollinate as many as 10,000 flowers.
It’s not all about us, if we want to be truly successful at networking it is vital to appreciate what we can do for others and how our actions can impact and benefit. We meet many people along the way to achieving our own goals – are we as respected as the honey bee is to the flower?

Honey bees' wings stroke 11,400 times per minute, thus making their distinctive buzz.
We all have unique abilities to leave a lasting impression and for our message to be heard. What techniques are you employing to ensure your buzz is doing you justice? Think about it!
